Unlimited Choice of Tiles

Tile choices are limited only by your imagination. For most situations, we recommend glass tiles. They are available in a wide variety of colors with either a flat or glossy finish. And they are essentially weatherproof.

But we can't resist the appeal of the Mexican tile. Each tile is handmade with minor variations in size and color, as well as other "flaws" that add warmth and charm. One recent batch we received had an animal paw print embedded in the finish of one tile. [Paw prints are rare and highly prized by Mexican tile aficionados. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that you'll find this unique feature in any of your tiles.]

Everyone will tell you that Mexican tiles are not designed to withstand freezing climates. They are made of a porous clay that readily absorbs moisture which can then cause the tile to crack when the temperature drops below freezing. So we can only recommend Mexican tiles for summer use or year round in mild climates. But you should also know that we've been experimenting with sealing Mexican tiles before they are set and grouted. Combined with our water-resistant grouts and adhesives, we've had no failures so far in our Virginia (USDA zone 7 winters). So why not give Mexican tiles a try. Remember, the panels are interchangeable so you can easily change the tile to suit the seasons or your mood.

Porcelain tiles are another alternative, especially if you want the look of stone. Most porcelain tiles are recommended for exterior applications. And they are generally lighter than either glass or Mexican tiles.

If you're looking for something really different, recycled cork tiles offer a unique look. They are extremely light weight and can be stained just like wood. [Note: cork tiles must be stained before they are grouted; just let us know what color stain you prefer.]
